A video amplifier circuit for amplifying signals having repetitively occurring synchronizing intervals comprises a video input circuit for applying such a signal to the input electrode of an amplifier having stages 20, 24, via a capacitor 16, and a capacitor charging circuit which comprises a diode 40 which eliminates ripple and which is caused to conduct during the synchronizing intervals by a negative pulse from transformer 42, this pulse being applied via potentiometer 38 and resistor 36 to the capacitor 16 to charge it and at the same time to forward bias diode 18 which cuts off transistor 20 and thus disables the amplifier. The capacitor 16 is charged during these synchronizing intervals to a level which between these intervals suitably forward biases transistor 20 and allows operation of the amplifier. The value of this forward bias is determined by the charge on the capacitor, this being controlled by potentiometer 38. A circuit is given, Fig. 3 (not shown), of a colour television receiver employing such amplifiers. A further embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), employs feedback between the two stages 20, 24 of the amplifier.
