Framing; tanks.-Comprises improvements in vessels designed for carrying bulk cargoes, more particularly of that type in which the side walls of the hold-space from about the water-line are inclined inwards at an angle approximating to the angle of repose of the material carried, and are continued above the weather deck, the space between the weather deck, the ship's side, and the inclined portion of the hold forming topside water-ballast tanks. Above the weather deck, transverse walls constituting the end of the hatchways are also inclined, the spaces thus formed acting as transverse ballast tanks. The inclined sides 2 of the hold above the deck 3 constitute longitudinal coamings, extending throughout the length of the vessel. The topside tanks 14, the deck 3, and the coaming 5 are supported by longitudinal frames 22, and the tanks are stiffened by partial bulkheads or wash-plates 24. Bracket knees 27 are also fitted in way of the hatchways. Transverse waterballast tanks 7 are formed above the deck and situated between the ends of the hatchways 4, the tops 9 forming a narrow deck. The tanks 7 are supported upon bulb-angle beams 11 or by a deep-web frame or bulkhead. The transverse frames of the ship terminate beneath the tanks 14, and are connected to them by brackets 23. In a modification, deep-web frames are carried round the outside of the tanks 14. The hatchways 4 are usually of less width than the coamings 5 providing a fore-and-aft gangway 28 in way of the hatches. Around the hatchway margins, channel-bars 29 are fitted in which the flanges 32 of the hatch covers rest. The covers may be turned back to form a discharging- platform.
