[Also in Division G1] A folding rule comprises at least two flat members 6, 15 joined together by a self locking hinge to swing in the plane of the members, one hinge plate I being resilient and having at least one raised portion 4, 5 to engage a complementary depression 13, 14 in the other hinge plate 11 when the members are co-linear, the flat member 6 having the resilient hinge plate 1 having also a corresponding recess 8, 9 beneath the or each raised portion 4, 5 to accommodate the raised portion when the members 6, 15 are not co-linear. As described the long edges of the hinge plates are serrated (16 Figs. 4, 12 not shown) to grip the wood of the rule members 6, 15. The recess 8 in member 6 may be part cylindrical in cross section, or have a flat bottom (Fig. 5 not shown) in which case the resilient hinge plate (1a) may be shaped to spread outward as the raised portion is depressed. The long edges may grip the wooden members over only a short central length (16, 24 Figs. 8-12 and 15 not shown) with the free ends (20, 21) of the resilient member (1d) curved outwardly to project from the member 6.
